作者簡介
About the Author
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in 1849 in Manchester, England. When her father died suddenly, life became difficult for her mother. In 1863 the family moved to Tennessee, USA. Frances was sixteen years old. She began writing stories for ladies’ magazines and soon she was earning enough money for all of the family.
In 1853 Frances got married. Her husband, Swan Burnett, wanted to study medicine in Paris, so they went there to live with their baby son. While they were in Paris, their second son was born.
Soon after that they returned to the USA. Frances continued to write because Sawn didn’t earn much. In 1877 she published her first novel, and in 1884 she wrote her first children’s novel. It was about an American boy who becomes an English aristocrat. It was called Little Lord Fauntleroy. The book was very successful and created a new fashion for velvet suits with lace collars and long curly hair for boys. After 1887 Frances spent a lot of time in England. She lived in a large house with a lovely garden called Great Maytham Hall. This house and its gardens inspired her to write The Secret Garden.
In 1907 she returned to live in the USA. She spent the summers in her house on Long Island and the winters in her house in Bermuda. She died on Long Island in 1924.
