This volume is intended to be both a catalogue for the special exhibit that will mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Harvard-Yenching Institute"s founding and also a set of studies highlighting areas of the Harvard-Yenching Library"s collections. The eleven essays range from general surveys of the Library"s resources in particular areas to studies based on the Library"s holdings on particular subjects. Some essays, in an attempt to illustrate the rich and diverse collections at Harvard, also cover holdings on the same subject in other libraries or museums. The essays and the accompanying illustrations will demonstrate to the reader the richness and breadth of the Library"s collections, collections that are accessible to scholars from all over the world.

About the The Harvard-Yenching Library

The Harvard-Yenching Institute was established seventy-five years ago, in 1928, from the estate of Charles Martin Hall, founder of the Aluminum Company of America. The Institute"s purpose was then, as it is now, to promote higher education in Asia as well as Asian studies at Harvard. It soon assumed responsibility for building up at Harvard a library of East Asian studies, one that eventually came to be known formally as the Harvard-Yenching Library, familiarly as "the Yenching". In 1976 the library became an administrative unit within the Harvard College Library. With the support of the Institute and the College Library, it has developed into a world-renowned center for the study of East Asia.
